Madison County Telecommunication Committee  works to Improve Telecommunication

September 2007

Its been a year of major changes in telecommunications in the Ruby Valley. Since raising concerns regarding telecommunications upgrades are happening. I personally have to say that I am very pleased with the changes. Twin Bridges and Sheridan are being outfitted with fiber optics meaning our Internet speed once its up and running will be comparable to services in large metropolitan areas. Bundling of services will be possible in the future with the new system being installed. Economically, this is a huge step forward for bringing in high technology businesses to the area. While most residents don't want to see our valley change overnight, slow steady improvements are generally viewed as good....and improved telecommunications is one of the cornerstones of slow steady growth. Think also about tele-medicine opportunities at the hospital because we have fiber optics, as one example on how we can benefit from these improvements and could even save lives in the future. The fiber optics have been a pain to install and there have been some headaches the towns have worked through, but when its all done, the benefits will greatly outweigh the headaches.

The Madison County Telecommunication Committee formed as a   result of a community meeting held in Virginia City on June 13th of 2006. The committee implements challenging projects that make a difference for improving telecommunications, implements on-the-ground projects that build infrastructure, educates residents and business on choices they have for telecommunications, and conducts outreach for our urban and rural communities in digital and newsletter formats.  The committee endorses the idea of improving cell coverage and    regional high speed internet in the Ruby Valley. The primary goal is   providing coverage for emergency services and the secondary goal is for economic development. The committee hopes to partner with Frank Ford’s committee and Madison County to improve cell coverage in places like Virginia City. We will be working with Madison County to assess possibilities and looking at rural utility grants, emergency     services grants, and economic development grants. We will also    contact some private entities who may be interested in paying for the improvements. The committee is set up informally for now and will meet as needed, with the next meeting scheduled for December 5th at 730am at the Sheridan Library.

Special points of interest:

· Sheridan is wired!  See below for details.

for community and business information for Sheridan and to earn money for the Sheridan library and schools.

Cellular Service in Sheridan   Chinook Wireless is one service that many of us know is definitely available in Sheridan.  But there are couple other services that work also, and may serve you well if you need cell phone service when you travel outside Montana.  Neither of these services specifically offer cell phone coverage in Sheridan, but their phones do pick up a signal.Cingular has an agreement to share Chinook’s network.  If you go with their      service, you will end up with an out of state phone number, and Cingular needs to give you a special chip for the phone, but if you travel a lot, that inconvenience might be worth it.  You can call Cingular for more information at 1-888-333-6651.We have also heard that T-Mobile picks up a signal in some areas of Sheridan, since hunters and tourists were able to get service.  You can contact T-Mobile at 1-800-766-2453 for more information.
Sheridan is Wired!  The town of Sheridan is wired and it’s not just from the espresso at Serendipity! If you have a wireless setup on your laptop computer, you can read emails and surf the Internet while on Main Street in Sheridan.  This is a great service,       supported by Triple Creek Development local office and retail space company. This wireless internet service will promote Sheridan as a business center and as a technology center for the county. Of course tourists will have another reason to stop in Sheridan and shop local businesses too!  There is also a very informative website, www.sheridanwired.com, that has lots of good information about our community, the local government and businesses in the area.  You can also raise money for the Sheridan library and schools by making your book purchases using the Barnes and Noble link on the www.sheridanwired.com.  Every purchase will generate a donation between 1 and 8.5% of the purchase price that will then be split equally between the library and the schools.  Now that’s a bonus when you buy a book!
