Sheridan Public Library Fall Newsletter 2008

The Friends of the Sheridan Public Library are raffling a Library Centurion 25-Gun Safe(23 cu. Ft, 30" x 60.5" x22") provided by K2 Spas & Sports in Billings. The safe is on display at the Ruby Valley Bank in Sheridan. Tickets are available for $5 or 5 for $20 at the Library and from various businesses. The raffle will end November 30, and proceeds will go toward covering the costs of the new lighting. The winner is responsible for local pickup or all shipping charges. For more information, contact Carol Lee Swager at 842-5554.

The Friends are running a silent auction through the end of the September at the library.

Among the items up for bid are collectible figurines, oriental vases and a wooden birdhouse. In addition, a Roberta Wesley print of a landscape with horses is available for bid.

The Friends will sell 2009 calendars with historic Sheridan photos starting at the end of October. Contact Lee Swager for more information.

The Library needs volunteers to carry books from Sheridan to Twin Bridges as part of our 4-Rivers User Sharing Group. This program enables Sheridan Library patrons to borrow or order books from libraries in Ennis, Virginia City, Twin Bridges, Whitehall, Clancy and Three Forks.

If you travel to or pass through Twin or Virginia City on a regular basis, please stop by the library or contact Bill Talbott (842-5770) to see if we have books to drop off at the Twin Bridges Library. You can help us make this a fast and convenient service for everyone.

The Library highlights Banned Books Week from September 28 through October 4, with a series of movies based on banned and challenged books.

From Tuesday the 30th through Saturday the 4th, we will show one film

based on a banned/challenged book every evening. The series will include Hucklebeny Finn, based on the often-challenged book by Mark Twain; Fahrenheit 451, based on the Ray Bradbury book which was challenged just last year in Texas; and three others, depending on availability. Contact the Library for titles and watch for fliers around town!

THANKS to everyone who made our Ice Cream Social a resounding success.

Special thanks go to Mark Weber of the Virginia City Creamery, who provided the delicious ice cream, and Gary Costle and Jane Bing-Craig, who provided the musical entertainment.

Robber's Roost
This was also known as Daly’s roadhouse and was the hangout for the “innocents” The innocents were part of Sheriff Henry Plummer’s gang. The gang made their living picking the pockets of travelers, back in 1864 when gold was pouring out of Alder; Henry Plummer was the Sheriff out of Bannack, the first territorial capital of
Montana.
